Happy cows make better milk

Our herd.

Our extended family of Holsteins have a constant, calm, easygoing demeanor.  We at the Hickory Hill Farm offer the highest level of care to all our livestock from birth to maturity. They are pasture-raised and dine on high-quality forage year-round. Because they are lactating cows, they are also fed a balanced diet based on the silage we grow. We do not give our cows injections of growth hormones or feed antibiotics.

We, at Hickory Hill Milk, are also always considering new improvements to promote the health of our cows. When our cows are healthy, it’s reflected in the milk they produce. We believe in the humane treatment of each and every cow under our care, no matter their age or sex.  And for those reasons our cows wear a SCR device collar that help us maintain a healthy herd and why we built them their very own 30,000 square foot barn designed for extreme cow comfort equipped 200-free stalls plus two DeLaval robotic milking machines. Our herd can eat when they want, get their backs' scratched when they want, milk themselves when they want, drink fresh water when they want, lay down and chew their cud when they want (in a super sanitary cool sandy bed), all while fans are blowing to keep flies at bay and the temps just right. We call it the "Taj Moohall;" the only thing they're missing is music playing in the background ... you guessed it, that's on our To-Do List.

Our process.

Hickory Hill Milk is fresh, local milk collected on our farm twice a day and bottled on-site five days a week. Our milk is all-natural, old-fashioned whole milk. It’s guaranteed to be rBGH (hormone) and antibiotic free. We process our milk as little as allowable for flavor, nutrients, and freshness. Hickory Hill Milk is low-temp pasteurized, meaning it is heated to 145-degrees and held there for 30 minutes then cooled as quickly as possible. This gives our milk the smooth, sweet taste of yesteryear and preserves the naturally occurring enzymes that help your body easily digest it. Granted, this process takes more effort, but we don’t mind. The great taste is worth every minute. Hickory Hill Milk is also non-homogenized, a rare find these days and return to nostalgia when a thick layer of cream rose to the top of each bottle.

Our milk.

Because Hickory Hill Milk is non-homogenized and low-temp pasteurized all elements in the milk remain intact and beneficial to your body. Both are reasons why our milk sets us apart from others at the dairy counter. Some of the benefits of low-temp pasteurized, non-homogenized milk are:

  • Loaded with high-quality protein that helps burn body fat, generate energy, and build muscle tone.
  • Full of Vitamins A and D and CLA (conjugated linoleic acid), an antioxidant shown to offer protection against breast cancer in women.
  • The natural sugars in non-homogenized milk aid in calcium absorption, contributing to the formation of strong bones, lowering blood pressure in approximately 1/3 of people with hypertension, improving blood lipid levels, lowering LDL (bad) cholesterol, lowering the risk of colon cancer and contributing to osteoporosis prevention.
  • Hickory Hill Milk also contains healthy bacteria that helps protect against nasty little organisms that cause diseases.
